Fur Cleaning and Fur Reconditioning

We provide a fur cleaning and fur reconditioning service to protect the quality of your fur garments.

Fur garments left in a home wardrobe can be exposed to humidity, dryness, heat, unwelcome odours, mothballs, insects and dust particles.  A fur just like human hair also tends to become greasy and dirty with time and wear.

Fur cleaning and glazing is essential for protecting the natural lustre and supple texture of your fur garments and should only be carried out by a professional furrier and not a dry cleaner.  It not only keeps the moisture and shine in your fur, but also preserves the leather underside and interior lining.  The process will also prevent hairs from sticking together at the base in a way that creates “dirty” unattractive appearance and the inside leather from cracking and drying.

Unlike traditional dry cleaners, professional fur cleaners, place your fur in a large drum filled with sawdust and an environmentally safe cleaning solution. The coat is tumbled in this drum which draws the dirt and oils from the fur.  The coat is then vacuumed to remove the sawdust and finally, hand steamed to remove any final residue.  The next process involves “electrifying” the coat.  Using large rollers, electricity is used to make each hair lift, separate and lie in the same direction.  Depending on the fur type and condition, glazing may then be necessary to bring out the natural lustre and sheen of the garment after it has been cleaned.  It involves a steaming and ironing process.

Demothing a coat is a separate process and in addition to the cleaning process.  All garments are checked for moth before entering Furs of Mayfair’s own cold storage facility.

Properly cleaned and glazed fur will maintain your garment’s shine and silkiness, but it is essential to ensure that your garment lasts for generations, that it is stored at a specialised fur cold storage facility during the summer months.  Furs of Mayfair is the only furrier in the UK that has their own cold storage facility specialised for fur with ‘state-of-the-art’ equipment.

A fur garment should be cleaned on average, once every two years if it is worn on a regular basis.  Furs are cleaned in a special process using sawdust which will remove dust particles, make it soft and supple and restore its natural sheen.
